Halloweensie 2019 : Franken’s Potion Notion

It’s as much a part of fall for me as mild temps and rainy days. (Because that’s what it looks like in South Louisiana.) I’m so excited that it’s finally time for Susanna Hill’s 9th Annual Halloweensie writing contest!

Read on and you’ll find the contest rules and my first every rhyming entry! (At least I think, it’s hard to keep track.) Featured Image courtesy of iStock Photo.

Good luck to everyone participating! Happy Halloween!!

The Contest: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in the 100 words), using the words potion, cobweb, and trick.  Your story can be scary, funny, sweet, or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!)  Get it?  Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people 🙂

Franken’s Potion Notion

Little Franken had the notion,

To make Mummy’s secret potion.

For his neighbor Mrs. Sweet,

To give her during trick-or-treat.

Franken guessed she wasn’t well.

He hadn’t seen her in a spell.

It always helped when he was sick.

He hoped for her, it’d do the trick.

He walked next door and knocked three times,

Then pressed and heard the door bell chime.

But he found cobwebs, stacks of mail

And empty, knocked down garbage pails.

So, he ran home. He told his mom.

She didn’t panic. She stayed calm

“There’s a simple explanation

Mrs. Sweet is …on vacation!”

Thanks for reading, come back anytime!

  1. What a charming little monster! And a wonderful story for children. I love that Franken is so thoughtful of his neighbor yet also knows to seek out adult help when needed. Your word choice is clever and playful. I especially like the use of “Mummy” and the phrases, “hadn’t seen her in a spell.” and “it’d do the trick.” Good luck!

  3. With the three words, spiders and witches were the most popular choice. It was nice to see the words taken in a different direction. Little Franken is so caring. Great Entry!

      • Wow, I didn’t realize you were a nurse too! I’m happy there are a lot of nurse-turned-writers! I think writing helps to de-stress from our hectic schedules, and “critical thinking”, and allows for the other side of our brains to take over for awhile. So nice to meet you here, and best of luck to you in the contest!
